The crescent moon rests in his coiled hair and the trishula, his trident, stands at his side; Shiva is shown here in deep meditation, his eyes lowered and calm. In Hinduism he is one of the principal deities, the great transformer, most often shown just as he is here: still and turned inward. We designed this piece in Fife and coloured every part of it by hand. The laser cuts each shape from its own sheet of wood, a single colour of natural oil woodstain is brushed onto each one so the grain still shows, and the painted pieces are then glued in sequence to build the relief, so the head rises clear of the wall and holds a soft shadow beneath it.
The third eye and the three brow-lines are painted in, the beads sit at his throat, and green and amber run through the coiled hair against the deep red-brown of the wood. The piece holds that same inward stillness, at home in a meditation corner, a mandir, or on a wall you pass and pause at. We make each one to order, usually ready inside two to seven days, and can scale it to the wall you have in mind.
