From Paper Sketch to Online Shop: How We Made Our Wooden Monkey Fridge Magnet

Ever wondered what goes into creating one of our handcrafted wooden pieces from absolute scratch? We documented the entire process of making our Multi-Layer Monkey Fridge Magnet — and it's all in the short video below.

From the very first pencil sketch on paper, through laser cutting, hand assembly, eco-finishing, all the way to product photography and uploading it to our shop — this is the real behind-the-scenes of DaVinci Enterprise.

Step 1: Drawing the design by hand

Every piece we create starts with an idea on paper. Before anything touches a laser cutter, we sketch the design by hand — working out the shape, the layering, and the symbolic details that will give the piece its character. For the monkey, we wanted to capture personality and playfulness while keeping the geometric, mandala-inspired style that defines our work.

Step 2: Converting to a digital vector file

Once we're happy with the hand-drawn concept, it gets translated into a precise digital vector file. This is what the laser cutter reads — every line, every curve, every cut mapped out exactly. This step is critical: tiny errors here become big problems in the physical product.

Step 3: Laser cutting the layers

The laser cutter gets to work on sustainably sourced hardwood plywood, cutting each layer with precision that no hand tool could match. The monkey magnet has six individually cut layers — each one slightly different, designed to stack together and create depth.

Step 4: Hand assembly and eco-finishing

Each layer is hand-assembled and carefully aligned. Then the whole piece is finished with nature-friendly oils that bring out the natural warmth and grain of the wood. Strong magnets are fitted to the back, and the base is engraved with 'Made in Scotland' — our mark of origin and pride.

Step 5: Product photography

Once the piece is finished, it's time to photograph it. Good product photography is everything in e-commerce — it has to show the texture, the depth, the layers, and the character of the piece. We set up each shot to show our magnet the way it deserves to be seen.

Step 6: Listing it in the shop

The final step is adding the product to our online shop — writing the description, setting the price, uploading the photos, and making it available to the world. From a sketch on paper to live on the internet: that's the DaVinci Enterprise journey.

The Multi-Layer Monkey Fridge Magnet is now available in our shop. Handcrafted in Scotland, finished with eco-friendly oils, and backed with strong neodymium magnets. If you love it as much as we loved making it, you can grab one here — or explore our full collection of wooden animal magnets.
